Pole vault takes center stage at Tipsy Steer and High Pines Brewing

Pole vaulting isn't a sport most people expect to find outside a neighborhood brewery, but that was exactly the scene in Roseville as Flight Deck Athletics transformed the parking lot outside the Tipsy Steer and High Pines Brewing into a full competition venue. A regulation runway and landing pit were installed directly in front of the patio, giving diners and beer enthusiasts a front-row seat to one of track and field's most technical events. The 6th annual Brewery Vault competition featured men's competition on Saturday and women's competition on Sunday, with athletes ranging from high school competitors to experienced open and masters vaulters.

Mother Nature couldn't have provided a better backdrop for the weekend. Both days featured sunny skies, warm temperatures and comfortable conditions, creating the perfect atmosphere for spectators to enjoy food, drinks and world-class pole vaulting just a few feet away. Throughout the day, competitors took turns sprinting down the runway before launching themselves high above the bar, drawing applause from the assembled crowd with every successful clearance. The unique setup created an inviting environment where casual visitors could experience the excitement of the sport up close, many for the first time.

Former University of Minnesota pole vault coach Caroline White, who organizes the event alongside her husband Steve White through Flight Deck Athletics, said the Street Vault is the only competition they personally host each year. She noted that while several similar events take place around the Twin Cities during the summer, this one has developed its own loyal following. White also explained that the brewery's owner and several friends regularly compete in the open division, giving the event the feel of a friendly neighborhood league while still attracting talented athletes from across the region.

The Brewery Vault continues to showcase how creative venues can introduce niche sports to new audiences. By bringing the competition out of the stadium and into a community gathering space, Flight Deck Athletics has created an event where serious competition and a relaxed summer afternoon blend together. Whether fans came specifically to watch pole vaulting or simply stopped by for lunch on the patio, they were treated to an entertaining display of athleticism unlike anything found at a typical brewery.
