Sutherland's 4-for-4 lifts Gophers over Tommies
Minnesota’s only two Division I baseball programs squared off one final time this season Tuesday night at Siebert Field, and the Golden Gophers left little doubt in the budding in-state rivalry matchup. The University of Minnesota powered past St. Thomas 12-1 in seven innings, completing a season sweep of the Tommies with another dominant midweek performance.
After St. Thomas grabbed an early lead in the opening inning, Minnesota quickly answered with authority. Charlie Sutherland’s two-run blast sparked a three-run first, giving the Gophers control they would never relinquish. From there, Minnesota’s offense continued to apply pressure, adding runs in nearly every frame while aggressively attacking on the basepaths and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
Sutherland delivered one of the most explosive offensive performances of the season, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and seven RBIs. Davis Hamilton also played a major role, collecting three hits and two RBIs, while Minnesota’s lineup consistently forced the issue with seven stolen bases. The Gophers’ balanced attack overwhelmed the Tommies both at the plate and on the bases.
On the mound, Minnesota’s pitching staff shut down St. Thomas after the first inning, combining for six straight scoreless frames. Logan Winkelman set the tone early, while Tyler Hemmesch earned the win with two clean innings out of the bullpen. With strong pitching, timely hitting, and relentless offensive pressure, Minnesota once again proved why it currently holds the upper hand in the battle between the state’s Division I baseball programs.
