Gophers take game 1 with scoring frenzy
The University of Minnesota wasted no time taking control Friday night at Siebert Field, overwhelming Michigan in a 13-1 victory that ended after seven innings. The Gophers came out swinging from the opening frame and never gave the Wolverines an opportunity to settle into the game. Minnesota’s offense stayed aggressive throughout the night, piling up extra-base hits and consistently capitalizing on scoring chances to open the weekend series in dominant fashion.
After jumping ahead early, the Gophers kept applying pressure inning after inning. Easton Richter helped set the tone with a first-inning three-run blast, while Ty Allen added another long ball in the third as Minnesota steadily widened the gap. Jack Bello delivered one of the biggest performances of the evening, driving balls all over the field and eventually crushing a three-run homer during a four-run fourth inning that effectively put the game out of reach.
Minnesota’s pitching staff matched the offense step for step. Starter Isaac Morton kept Michigan quiet through the early innings, allowing little hard contact while working through more than four innings on the mound. Once the bullpen took over, Adam Urban shut the door completely. The right-hander attacked the strike zone and struck out five hitters over 2.2 scoreless innings, helping hold the Wolverines to only four hits in the game.
The win showcased one of Minnesota’s most complete efforts of the season. Every starter found a way to contribute offensively, the lineup drew walks and delivered timely hits, and the pitching staff never allowed Michigan to build momentum. By the time Davis Hamilton added another RBI in the sixth inning, the outcome was no longer in doubt as the Gophers cruised to a convincing run-rule victory to begin the series.
