Gopher Baseball get a series sweep against Northwestern
Minnesota wrapped up a dominant weekend at Siebert Field on Sunday, defeating Northwestern 7-2 to complete their first Big Ten home series sweep since 2019. The Golden Gophers leaned on strong pitching, timely hitting, and a late offensive surge to secure the milestone victory while continuing their momentum in conference play.
Starter Cole Selvig delivered one of his best performances of the season, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and one walk. The right-hander kept Northwestern off balance throughout the afternoon, striking out five and setting the tone early as Minnesota’s defense backed him up effectively.
After a quiet start offensively, Weber Neels broke the game open in the sixth inning with a two-run homer to left field. Minnesota’s bats came alive again in the seventh, erupting for five runs behind key contributions from Neels, Jack Spanier, and Charlie Sutherland. Neels finished with a standout 3-for-4 day, driving in four runs, while Sutherland added a clutch two-run double to help put the game out of reach.
The victory marked more than just a series sweep. It also secured head coach Ty McDevitt’s 50th career win with the program. With the home crowd celebrating a historic conference sweep, Minnesota now turns its attention to a midweek showdown against St. Thomas as the Gophers look to keep building on their strong season.
