Gopher Spring Game - Gold 31- 7 Maroon
The Minnesota Golden Gophers football wrapped up spring practices with an impressive showing in their annual spring game at Huntington Bank Stadium, as the Gold Team rolled to a 31–7 win over the Maroon Team. The performance highlighted a balanced offensive approach and a dominant defensive effort, giving fans an early look at the team’s developing identity heading into the fall.
Gold’s quarterbacks set the tone with efficient and explosive play. Owen Lansu made the most of limited attempts, completing 5 of 7 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown, while Michael Merdinger added two touchdown passes of his own. The passing game proved to be the difference, stretching the field and creating big-play opportunities, including a 50-yard connection from Lansu to Hayden Moore and a scoring strike to Zion Steptoe.
Defensively, the Gold unit controlled the game from the outset, particularly against the run. They held the Maroon Team to just seven rushing yards on 12 attempts, with linebacker Nate Cleveland leading the charge with 10 tackles, a sack, and multiple tackles for loss. The pressure up front and disciplined tackling kept the Maroon offense largely in check throughout the day.
After building a 10–0 lead in the first quarter, Gold maintained control despite a brief Maroon response before halftime. The second half belonged entirely to Gold, as they pulled away with consistent execution on both sides of the ball. Standout performances earned Gold players all three Spring Game MVP honors, signaling a strong and competitive roster as the Gophers continue preparations for the upcoming season.
