Solid outing by Gopher staff delivers 12-3 victory over NDSU

The University of Minnesota baseball team delivered a decisive 12–3 win over North Dakota State at Siebert Field, fueled by an explosive start and steady production throughout the game. The Gophers jumped out early with a leadoff home run from Jack Spanier and added another run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. They kept the pressure on in the second, erupting for four runs to build a commanding 6–1 lead and set the tone for the rest of the night.

Minnesota’s offense was powered by multiple standout performances, including Charlie Sutherland and Sam Hunt, who each drove in three runs and homered. Weber Neels also had a big night at the plate, collecting two hits and launching a home run of his own. The Gophers showcased their depth offensively, tallying 12 hits, four home runs, and getting contributions up and down the lineup, with every starter reaching base safely.

On the mound, Minnesota’s pitching staff controlled the game by limiting North Dakota State to just four hits while striking out 14. Caden Capomaccio earned the win with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Josh Kirchhoff also contributed with two shutout frames. Even as the Bison briefly cut the deficit to 7–3, the Gophers responded with additional runs in the middle and late innings, including a three-run homer from Hunt in the eighth to seal the victory.

The night also featured a not-necessarily wanted individual milestone, as Weber Neels set a new program record after being hit by a pitch for the 43rd time in his career. Although celebrating the “achievement”, this may not be his goal at the beginning of his collegiate career.
